Designed by Craig Byrnes in 1995, the International Bear Brotherhood Flag grew out of his psychology studies at Mary Baldwin University in Staunton, Virginia. For a senior project exploring bear culture within the LGBTQIA+ community, Byrnes wanted to create a symbol that represented the bear community.
Its warm stripes are commonly understood to reference the natural fur colours of bears, while the bold paw print gives the flag its unmistakable character. Today, it stands as a symbol of friendship, belonging and recognition for bears and those connected to bear culture.
